California Governor Gavin Newsom is preparing to launch a new memecoin, “Trump Corruption,” as part of a campaign to mock former President Donald Trump’s online persona and direct proceeds toward democracy-related initiatives.

Newsom aims at Trump’s online persona

Newsom revealed the project during a recent appearance on the “Pivot” podcast with Kara Swisher, stating that the memecoin will parody Trump’s penchant for using capital letters and AI-generated superhero images.

According to an NBC Los Angeles report, Newsom intends the coin to highlight what he sees as the absurdity of Trump’s digital presence.

He explained that the memecoin will fund his Campaign for Democracy and redistricting efforts.

Newsom added that while the project is satirical, it also reflects serious concerns about the state of U.S. democracy.

Trump Corruption Coin details

Newsom noted the coin will serve as a counter to Trump-related digital assets, including the official TRUMP token.

Proceeds will support grassroots organizing.

He joked the original name idea was “Smelt,” referencing reports about Trump’s fragrance, and said he might even crowdsource names for a Trump-themed perfume line.

Despite the humor, Newsom emphasized the political intent, referencing recent concerns among Democrats about Trump’s foray into digital tokens.

He also expressed confidence that his coin could outperform Trump’s, referencing past White House banter over digital asset profits.

A shift to confrontation

Newsom said his more aggressive approach began after failed cooperation with Trump’s administration over federal disaster aid.

The turning point came when Trump sent National Guard troops to Los Angeles during immigration raids, prompting Newsom to direct his staff to adopt a more confrontational public stance.

He stated that Americans should expect increased trolling and digital campaigns as the presidential race escalates, signaling that the contest between Trump and Democratic challengers is expanding into digital and financial spheres.
